Three Toads Farm Provides Flowers to Winchester Area
business, flowers, three toads farm,
It’s a Winchester business that liter ally blossomed from the beginning.
Three Toads Farm started off as a side business and collaboration among friends to make some extra money.
But a strong local demand for colorful‚ home grown flowers soon grew the hobby into a full-time business.
“It swallowed us up‚” jokes Charlie Hendricks‚ a retired firefighter who runs the flower farm along with Bob Early and Val Schirmer.
Three Toads Farm operates year-round‚ and all the growing takes place in two large‚ temperature-controlled greenhouses on property near the heart of Winchester on Colby Road.
Lilies are the leading ladies of the farm‚ but there’s plenty of room for supporting roles from other flowers. Depending on the season‚ flowers grown include zinnias‚ hydrangeas‚ larkspur and amaryllis.
In the summertime‚ large sun flowers are a big hit with customers‚ Hendricks says. “Some of them grow to the size of dinner plates‚” he says.
The farm’s specialties are Oriental and hybrid lilies‚ grown in pink‚ lemon yellow‚ creamy white and peach colors. Three Toads Farms is a consistent pres ence at the Lexington Farmers’ Market‚ the largest in Kentucky. Besides selling flowers onsite‚ the owners also sell bouquets of their blooming wonders to restaurants and businesses.
